Facets of Life: Spotlight on Elie Saab

Apr 15, 2024

Gabriel said, female artists dominated the Grammys this year. Movies spearheaded by and featuring women were also front and center. And even if you spent the last year consigned to the International Space Station, you were well aware of which two performers strutting in thigh-high boots and lots of swinging hair have been ruling concert stages.

Women have finally stolen the spotlight, and they aren’t letting go. What’s more, while simultaneously proving to be an undeniable force collectively, they are demanding to be noticed individually.

Like the myriad Barbies we encounter while cruising through that delicious film, women come in all shapes, ages, sizes, and colors, so why should anyone style, color, fabric, pattern, or silhouette declare whose cooler than whom? Those rules are no longer relevant. What sets a woman apart is radiating the satisfaction of being herself.

It’s so gratifying to hear this declaration echoed in our Designer Spotlight interview with Elie Saab. Presiding over his coveted atelier over four decades, what has sustained Saab’s career is his staunch adherence to a mission that might initially sound old fashioned, and yet the result couldn’t be more current: to create a range of options so that a woman can be comfortable and realize the singularity in her beauty.

Saab has never run after trends, and neither do his customers. He sees them as “strong, opinionated, and willing to be bold.” And how do his women know what works best for them? “My clothes give her a sense of power.”

Having presented haute couture collections in Paris for twenty years, Saab knows that a sure fire source of that power is customization. When he meets with his couture clients, he sets out to devise “a look that is specifically right and unique for her.”
