New Year’s resolutions aren’t for us

Jan 13, 2024

roberto coin 1Angelica Vincenzi said at Roberto Coin, we’re not fans of New Year’s resolutions – we think they’re pretentious and they become loathsome as soon as we realize the effort we’ll have to make to fulfill them or the judgement we’ll sense if we fail to.

It’s not that we like to desecrate goals, quite the opposite. It’s just that we prefer dreams to resolutions. Maybe it’s because we create jewelry every day, so we’re used to seeing courageous ideas turn into surprising miniatures capable of conquering the world on the fingers or around the neck of those who wear them.

Our workshop is inhabited by people who know the real weight and importance of the truth, of relationships that break down, of children muttering their disapproval, of dinner that still has to be cooked, of ailments that come and go and that seemingly ever-present, annoying humidity that plagues northern Italy.

But when we get together on the first Monday of the year, we never talk about our earthly goals; we prefer to look at each other and ask, “What is it we’re going to create this year?”

Some people want a flying unicorn covered in pink, green and blue sapphires. Others have been waiting years for a jewelry line dedicated to armocromia, for beautiful pieces in the autumn, summer, winter or spring palettes with warm or cool tones that may be either brilliant or subdued. Still others want to see ebony or ceramic mixed with gold again and there are those who feel electrified by the titanium colors of Venetian Princess and now want to keep experimenting with the limits of metals and the colors of the rainbow.

This is what we like – to dream of creating crazy jewelry that combines exclusivity and inclusiveness, where we know that precious material isn’t for everyone but that creativity absolutely is. So thumbs up to the most magical, to the most daring inventions, to zoos full of mythological creatures and to divas of enchanted worlds.

We’ll close our eyes for the ritual of beginning the New Year; it always has a good resolution for us: that of learning to play with our imagination!
