Taiwan’s jewellery market is increasingly polarised, with both the fine jewellery and affordable luxury segments demonstrating strong resilience amid evolving consumer demand, according to Taiwan jewellery manufacturers.
This trend was evident at the recently concluded Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair (TJG), which took place from November 21 and 24 after a five-year hiatus.
Some exhibitors told JNA that Taiwan’s mid-tier market had been shrinking while luxury and affordable segments remained resilient.
Yu Chungta, owner of Taiwan-based Chia Ta Jewellery Co Ltd, said, “There is a significant number of top-tier Taiwanese buyers with strong purchasing power. I am optimistic about business prospects. To achieve sustainable growth, we must produce high-quality jewellery with investment value.”
Chia Ta Jewellery showcased an array of premium ruby, sapphire and jadeite pieces, including their latest masterpiece – a one-of-a-kind pair of jadeite and ruby earrings – at the show.
Ju Yao International Jewelry Co Ltd Chairman Tiger Zhao also witnessed solid demand for fine gems and jewellery from affluent local clients. The big three – ruby, sapphire and emerald – were popular choices while Paraiba tourmaline gained further traction this year, thanks to celebrity influence, he added.
Ju Yao offers an extensive collection of rare coloured gemstone jewellery and layouts featuring unheated Burmese rubies and Colombian Muzo emeralds, among others.
Affordable luxury on the rise
Parallel to the high-end demand, there is a growing trend towards affordable luxury among local consumers. This caters to evolving consumer preferences for stylish yet value-driven everyday designs.
Alice Lin, CEO of Su-ao International Corporation, noted that local and overseas markets showed strong interest in affordable luxury pieces.
The company provides OEM and ODM services to global jewellery retailers and designers, including top-tier international luxury brands.
Su-ao’s latest lightweight gold jewellery pieces adorned with jadeites, fancy sapphires and pearls blend local artistry with Italian techniques and Japanese aesthetics, have garnered positive feedback.
“With high gold prices, our focus on lightweight and fashion-forward designs has become a natural advantage for us,” said Lin.
Annie Chen, founder of G&D Jewellery Design and chairman of the Chinese Jade Rock Association, echoed this sentiment. She explained, “Jewellery today is no longer just for special occasions. It is about self-expression and meaningful resonance. Consumers seek everyday pieces to reflect their individuality while staying within their budget.”
A highlight of her showcase was Gem Silica, also known as “Taiwan sapphire,” and opal pieces. The understated elegance of these stones perfectly aligned with this emerging trend.
