In a stunning revelation, Alrosa, a major player in the diamond mining industry, has announced the discovery of a remarkable 262.5-carat diamond at the Ebelyakh deposit in Yakutia’s Anabar region. This impressive gem, featuring a transparent monocrystal with minor graphite-sulfide inclusions and slight iron contamination, was unearthed during a nighttime washing of diamond-bearing sands.
This discovery adds to a series of significant finds at the site. Last year, on September 10, 2023, a record-setting 390.7-carat diamond was extracted from the same location, marking it as the largest diamond discovered in Russia in the past decade. The continued success at the Ebelyakh deposit underscores Yakutia’s immense potential for yielding extraordinary diamonds.
The Ebelyakh deposit is renowned for producing large and rare crystals. Notably, in 2017, the deposit yielded the “Ghost of the Rose,” a pure pink diamond of 27.85 carats, which became the most expensive diamond in Russia’s history.
