The mastery of, jewellery and objects of vertu

FabergeRecently, Dreweatts auction house hosted a landmark sale of works by Fabergé.  Featuring over 100 lots, “The Mastery of Fabergé, Jewellery & Objects of Vertu” presented an extraordinary opportunity to acquire pieces from one of the most celebrated luxury houses in history.

The collection predominantly hailed from a distinguished British private collection and showcased a variety of Fabergé’s signature designs, including jewellery, objets d’art, and rare accessories.  Among the highlights were two newly attributed Fabergé pieces, unearthed through meticulous research conducted by Dreweatts’ experts.

World-renowned Fabergé expert Geoffrey Munn commented on the sale, stating: “This collection is nothing short of extraordinary. It epitomises the unparalleled craftsmanship, elegance, and innovation that made Fabergé internationally famous. The newly attributed pieces further underscore the enduring mystery and artistry of Fabergé’s work, making this sale a rare and thrilling event for collectors and connoisseurs alike.”

One of the rediscovered pieces was an aquamarine and diamond pendant (Lot 17). The pendant was left to its current owner by her mother, whose Russian friend escaped St. Petersburg in 1918, smuggling her jewellery in the hem of her dress. A scratched inventory number on the pendant’s gallery matched an entry in Fabergé’s Imperial Cabinet Ledgers from 1912, documenting its creation as a gift from the Imperial family. This piece had an estimate of between £7,000 – £10,000 and sold for £35,000.

Fabergé’s spring advertising campaign, shot during brief pauses in bidding by expert gem photographer Casey Moore at Gemfields’ ruby auction in Singapore, features Fabergé timepieces, lockets and rings alongside Gemfields’ uncut gemstones – showcasing the beauty of these gemstones in their natural state.

Rubies from Gemfields’ Montepuez Ruby Mine in Mozambique and emeralds from Gemfields’ Kagem Mine in Zambia are responsibly mined – with proceeds from auctions helping build schools, mobile health clinics and projects to establish improved livelihoods for thousands of families.
