Just earlier, on the 5 September Gem Diamonds had announced the recovery of a 122.20ct Type II White Diamond recovered at the Letšeng mine in Lesotho on 01 September 2024. This was the eleventh greater than 100 carat diamond recovered in 2024.
The Letšeng kimberlites are unique and have been a source of intrigue for geologists since their discovery. Not only are the diamond populations atypical, but the way the pipes were formed, and their emplacement history is unusual. The Letšeng mine is located in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho and is renowned for its recovery of large, high quality, exceptional Type II diamonds.
Since Gem Diamonds acquired Letšeng in 2006, it has recovered more than 126 greater than 100 carat, rough diamonds. Letšeng is renowned for its large top colour exceptional white diamonds, making it the highest average dollar per carat kimberlite diamond mine in the world.
