GIA Takes 30% Stake in De Beers’ Tracr Blockchain Platform

Jun 01, 2026

148119167 GIAGIA has acquired a 30% shareholding in Tracr, the De Beers Group-backed blockchain platform focused on natural diamond provenance and traceability, marking a key step in Tracr’s transition towards becoming an independent, industry-wide solution.

The investment builds on GIA’s existing collaboration with Tracr, which began in 2023 with the inclusion of provenance information from Tracr on eligible GIA diamond grading reports. The move is intended to strengthen the platform’s credibility and support wider adoption of source-based provenance across the diamond value chain.

Al Cook, CEO of De Beers Group, said consumers deserve greater confidence in understanding where their diamonds originate. He noted that De Beers has provided provenance data through Tracr for several years and believes provenance should become an industry standard. He added that the partnership with GIA supports the company’s commitment to opening Tracr to broader ownership as it evolves into an independent platform.

Pritesh Patel, President and CEO of GIA, said the institute’s collaboration with Tracr reinforced its belief that combining blockchain-based provenance with GIA’s grading and identification expertise could deliver a higher level of transparency for the industry. He said GIA sees strong potential in providing verifiable provenance information from source to consumer as Tracr expands globally.

Jillian Wolk, CEO of Tracr, described the investment as a strong foundation for the platform’s next phase, adding that expanding participation from more producers would help bring the individual journey of each registered diamond to life.

De Beers began developing Tracr in 2018 and opened the platform to the wider diamond industry in 2023 as a scalable rough-to-polish verification system for natural diamond provenance. The platform currently has more than five million rough diamonds registered at source, representing roughly two-thirds of De Beers’ rough diamond production by value. Since January 2025, Tracr has also enabled single-country-of-origin information for De Beers diamonds, with all newly sourced De Beers rough diamonds of one carat and above registered on the platform.
