Mogok: A huge, uncut ruby weighing 11,000 carats was discovered in the Mogok region of central Myanmar.
Weighing approximately 2.2 kilograms, the gemstone was presented to the country’s military leader, president-elect Min Aung Hlaing. The stone has a purple-red hue, moderate transparency, and high reflectivity.
The Mogok region of Mandalay district, often referred to as the “Valley of Rubies,” is world-renowned for producing highly prized Burmese rubies, particularly those with the coveted “blue blood” color. A ruby weighing approximately 4,290 grams (21,450 carats) was also discovered there in 1996.
Despite growing production in Africa, such as Mozambique, rubies of Burmese origin continue to enjoy high prestige and command high prices on the international colored gemstone market. This discovery comes at a time when the dominance and responsibility of leaders is under intense scrutiny in the global jewelry industry.
Following the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, the gemstone sector continues to face criticism from international human rights groups and trade parties, raising concerns about conflict-related mining and the transparency of the gemstone supply chain.
This discovery is expected to renew global trade attention on rare colored gemstones, rough Burmese rubies, and the history that has emerged in the luxury jewelry segment.
