The Eden Project, Cornwall – The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is thrilled to announce a landmark celebration marking its 20th anniversary with a unique event that will leave a legacy for future generations. On Friday 4th July the RJC will bury a time capsule at the renowned Eden Project in the Core Gardens, symbolising commitment to sustainable practices and ethical standards within the jewellery and watch industry.

There is a strong history that binds the RJC and the Eden Project and why a natural decision as the place for the RJC time capsule. The Core at the Eden Project opened in 2005 (the same year the RJC was set up) it features a distinctive copper roof that is both artistically and environmentally significant. The copper was fully traceable to Rio Tinto’s Kennecott mine in Utah, selected for its environmental compliance. Beginning in 2002, Rio Tinto supported the project with both funding and transparent copper sourcing. Led by John Hall General Manager of Rio
Tinto Corporate Relations, who now 20 years later is the interim executive director of the RJC and Sue Brooks then Corporate Relations Adviser for Rio Tinto now Standards General Manager of the RJC. The RJC time capsule is only the second, the first, buried in 2006 has a handwritten message by HRH Queen Elizabeth who was there in person for the opening of The Core and burial of the first, time capsule at the Eden Project.
The late Queen’s message in the first Eden Project time capsule from 2006 as reported by the BBC is so on point for 2025,
“I am confident the Eden Project will continue to encourage a better understanding of the planet on which we live and offer a vision of hope for the future and inspire us all to work to make this world a better place for everyone.”
The RJC time capsule, filled with significant mementos, documents, and messages from RJC team, members, stakeholders, and board aims to encapsulate the values and achievements of the past two decades while also looking forward to the future of responsible sourcing and sustainability in the jewellery sector. This event is integral to RJC’s ongoing mission to promote ethical practices and foster a transparent supply chain.

This time capsule will serve as a reminder of our journey, the challenges we have faced, and the progress we continue to make toward ensuring a responsible and sustainable future for the jewellery industry.”
The burial of the time capsule will take place during a special event attended by the RJC and Eden Project team. The event at the Eden Project is part of a broader initiative by RJC to increase awareness and engagement around sustainability, ethical sourcing, and corporate responsibility within the jewellery and watch industry.
