The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has announced the launch of Hallmarking Unique Identification-based (HUID) hallmarking for silver jewellery and articles on a voluntary basis, effective 1 September 2025.
The move empowers consumers to verify purity and trace details such as article type, fineness, date of hallmarking, jeweller’s registration number, and assaying centre information through the BIS Care App.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which first introduced voluntary silver hallmarking in 2005, has now revised its standards with the release of IS 2112:2025, replacing IS 2112:2014. The updated hallmark includes three elements — BIS Standard Mark with the word “SILVER,” purity grade, and HUID code. Two new purity grades, 958 and 999, have been added, taking the total to seven.
At present, 230 BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres across 87 districts conduct silver testing. In FY 2024-25, more than 32 lakh silver jewellery articles were hallmarked.
To ensure smooth transition, BIS held a stakeholder consultation on 7th August 2025 with jewellers, hallmarking centres, and consumer representatives. It is also conducting awareness campaigns through its branch network and social media platforms.
The initiative is expected to strengthen consumer rights and provide greater assurance against malpractice in silver jewellery transactions.
