As part of a Swiss non-profit foundation, the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF recognises its responsibility to go beyond laboratory services and to actively contribute to the integrity, transparency, and advancement of the gem and jewellery sector.
The 99th CIBJO Congress is currently taking place in Paris (27-29 October), marking a momentous gathering for the global jewellery industry as the World Jewellery Confederation enters its centenary year. With dynamic discussions on sustainability, standards, and transparency, this year’s congress highlights CIBJO’s enduring importance as the industry’s leading forum for collaboration and progress.
SSEF is proud to contribute actively through its participation in several commissions, reinforcing our shared commitment to scientific excellence, integrity, and responsible practices across the gem and jewellery sector.
Some examples of SSEF’s ongoing commitments within CIBJO include;
1: SSEF staff have contributed their scientific expertise to several CIBJO commissions and working groups since 2000. Jean-Pierre Chalain currently serves as Vice-President of the Diamond Commission, with Dr. Krzemnicki, Dr. Cartier, and Dr. Mintrone participating in others.
2: Contributions to ISO standards for diamonds and custodianship of the CIBJO Diamond Master Set C1 since 1980.
Some examples of ongoing commitments in research and education initiatives include,
1: Education scholarships for courses at SSEF, as well as scholarships in partnership with GemGenève, supporting education and young talent in gemmology.
2: Collaborations with the Institute of Forensic Medicine (University of Zurich) on DNA fingerprinting of pearls and corals and ETH Zurich on age dating of pearls.
3: All our research articles published since 1981 are freely available on our website’s Research Library.
