Russia’s Resolution No 657, coming into effect on September 1, 2026, brings in new labeling and marketing guidelines for synthetic stones used in jewelry. These changes are designed to promote greater transparency for consumers and help prevent any misleading descriptions of products.
The government of the Russian Federation has approved new regulations for the sale of jewelry containing synthetic stones, effective from September 1, 2026. These regulations, encompassed within Resolution No. 657 dated May 30, 2026, revise retail standards for certain items, including precious metals and gemstones.
According to these regulations, jewelry featuring artificial materials that are named after natural minerals must explicitly state that the stone is “synthetic” on tags and labels, with “Synthet.” serving as an acceptable abbreviation. The usage of the term “diamond” and related expressions to describe synthetic stones is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, retailers are barred from using quality and color descriptions typically associated with natural diamonds.
Terms such as “precious,” “genuine,” “natural,” “mined,” “mineral,” or “eco-friendly” are also forbidden from consumer-facing information pertaining to synthetic stones in jewelry made from precious metals. These regulations are applicable to labels, tags, and all consumer information, with the aim of distinguishing natural from synthetic stones more explicitly and enhancing transparency.
When artificial materials are utilized as inlays in jewelry made from precious metals, the same labeling regulations must be adhered to, ensuring accurate and non-misleading information regarding the synthetic nature. This development reflects ongoing global initiatives to regulate disclosure standards within the diamond and jewelry industries, emphasizing transparency and proper product identification for international manufacturers, retailers, and suppliers.
