Joy was trained and mentored by the Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) under expert trainer Anupam Karmakar of Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers (VBJ).

The WorldSkills Competition, held every two years, is one of the world’s largest platforms for skills excellence, bringing together young professionals from across the globe to compete against demanding international standards in diverse vocational skills. The Shanghai edition provided an international platform for skilled youth to demonstrate technical ability, precision, creativity and craftsmanship.

Joy Das’s achievement further strengthens GJSCI’s consistent record at the WorldSkills Competition. The Council’s jewellery competitors have secured international recognition across successive editions, including Medallions of Excellence in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2024, and a Bronze Medal in 2019.

Joy’s latest achievement reflects GJSCI’s sustained focus on identifying promising talent, providing intensive technical training and preparing competitors to meet international benchmarks. The consistency of these results demonstrates the importance of industry-led training, expert mentorship and structured preparation.

Shri Rajeev Garg, Executive Director & CEO, GJSCI, said “Joy Das’s achievement is a matter of great pride for India and the entire gems and jewellery sector. His journey demonstrates how skills can transform lives and create opportunities on the global stage. GJSCI remains committed to building a strong pipeline of skilled professionals who can compete with the best in the world.”

Joy Das hails from Tamil Nadu and comes from a fisherman’s family. He studied up to Class VIII before pursuing specialised training in jewellery making. Through dedication and sustained practice, he developed his craftsmanship and went on to win gold medals at state and national-level skill competitions, eventually earning the opportunity to represent India at WorldSkills Shanghai.  His journey highlights the potential of vocational skills to create pathways for young people from diverse backgrounds and connect Indian talent with global opportunities.

Anupam Karmakar of Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers, who trained Joy for the competition, brought extensive practical industry experience and technical expertise to the preparation process. Karmakar has been associated with GJSCI’s WorldSkills training initiatives and has played an important role in mentoring Indian jewellery competitors. His expertise in precision jewellery craftsmanship, combined with competition-focused training, helped Joy refine his technical performance for the international stage.

WorldSkills demands precision, discipline and consistency at every stage. The objective was to help Joy strengthen his technical execution and confidence while maintaining the standards expected at an international competition is Anupam Karmakar’s strong belief.

For GJSCI, Joy’s Medal of Excellence represents more than an individual accomplishment. It is another milestone in the Council’s continuing efforts to develop globally competitive jewellery professionals through industry participation, expert trainers and rigorous skills training.

Shri Rajeev Garg also added “The success of our WorldSkills competitors is the result of a collective effort involving the candidate, trainers, industry experts and the wider skills ecosystem. Joy’s achievement reinforces our belief that Indian craftsmanship, when supported by structured training and global exposure, can earn recognition at the highest international level.”

Joy Das’s journey—from a modest background to representing India at WorldSkills Shanghai—stands as an inspiring example of how skill, perseverance and opportunity can take Indian talent to the world stage.
